Apparently the Netherlands is the world’s largest exporter of beer. Hmmm…I did not know that.
When I googled this is what I found. For such a small country, the Netherlands sure pumps out a lot of beer!!! Proost!! (Cheers!)
Below are the 15 countries that exported the highest dollar value worth of beer during 2017.
- Mexico: US$3.8 billion (26% of total beer exports)
- Netherlands: $2 billion (13.6%)
- Belgium: $1.7 billion (11.4%)
- Germany: $1.3 billion (8.9%)
- United States: $759.8 million (5.2%)
- United Kingdom: $676.1 million (4.7%)
The Netherlands is known for its pale lagers, especially Heineken and Grolsch which my fellow Canadians should be familiar with. These two are are well-known brands that are exported around the world. Amstel and Bavaria are also popular brands of beer that are exported from the Netherlands.
While pale lager makes up the majority of beer production and consumption in the Netherlands, Dutch brewers also brew other types like ‘witbier’ (white beer) and bok, which is brewed in Autumn and Spring. For more information and a long list of top dutch beers visit this site .
Anyone up for a Netherlands Beer Trip?
Wouldn’t it be great to just tour the country trying all the different dutch beers? I wonder if there is a company that would pay me to do just that – as a beer taster!! I would write a log of reviews for them! How fun would that be!
I like a dark beer and so I often drank beer from Belgian, which seemed to be plentiful in the Netherlands. One of my favorite was Affligem.
Some more interesting information can be found on wikipedia on dutch beer. Heineken is the 3rd largest brewer in the world. If you go to Amsterdam you should for sure visit the Heineken Museum. It is a beautiful old building, they entertain you, they liquid you up, and it is a fun time!
For those of you who live in and around Hamilton, Ontario or are planning to visit, my classmate Tansy has an awesome blog on Beer – check it out! Adventures in Brewville.
